Summary: On the morning of July 17, 1962, William Thompson and his crew and others were fighting the White Cap Fire in the roadless, rugged Selway-Bitterroot Primitive area. He was struck by a falling tree and died 40 minutes later. He was 23.

- William Thompson, who was from Hamilton, Montana, is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs James Thompson, brothers, sisters and his grandfather Joseph Iten, several times mayor of Hamilton and former state legislator from Ravalli County.
